Póvoa ... A sea for Enjoyment!
The people and their history...
Once upon a time there was simply the sea
and its edge a welcoming bay well suited for fishing. It was here
that a seashore community first established itself and in 1308 received
its letters patent from King Denis. But this moment of prominence
was not to last. Soon afterward the settlement was placed under
the administration of the Monastery of Santa Clara of Vila do Conde.
The town, it seems, was treated as something of a despised stepdaughter
by the church, until it finally achieved its independence once again
in 1514 by the order of King Manuel, the first. And from that moment
onward began an order of constant improvement that has left a fine
architectural heritage in terms of buildings, the materials used
to build them, and the various types of construction in the town.
Noble granite lends presence, structure and robustness to churches,
places and aqueducts. Yet the detailed use of varying materials:
stucco, wrought iron, painted ceramic tiles, or gold leaf. All these
can be found in profusion.
Crafts and Cuisine
In terms of local handcrafts, Póvoa is best known for the
so-called: camisola poveira ( Póvoa`s pullover), whose distinctive
embroidery makes this garment the city's calling card. Another distinctive
item - made nowhere else in Portugal - is the Beiriz carpet. Póvoa
is famous for its finely woven linen, its patchwork quilts and its
carpets. There are a number of first-class restaurants in Póvoa
de Varzim, where several different styles of Portuguese cuisine
can be found. From the northern province of Minho come the meat
dishes. And from Póvoa itself come the seafood specialities.
With the sea on its doorstep, it's inevitable that any local dishes
will give pride of place to fish. So dishes such as pescada à
poveira (boiled fish), caldeirada de peixe (fish stew) and arroz
de sardinhas (sardines with rice) all employ the freshest catch
the fishing boats can offer. Washed down with the local, slightly
sparkling vinho verde, this is seafood at its best. For dessert,
adventures diners should certainly try the rabanadas - a speciality
made of bread sprinkled with milk, sugar and eggs, and then fried
in olive oil. It goes without saying that the whole meal should
be rounded off with the fine glass of Port Wine. Any meal is only
as good as its ingredients, and here Póvoa takes special
pride: fresh vegetables are grown locally in the campos de masseira
or market gardens specially designed to give protection from the
coastal winds.

du Minho dont la viande est l´élément base ;
